In this year we spent our easterholiday on the German Northsee island "Sylt". This is the northernmost island in Germany and is in contact with the mainland via a 11 km long railroad dike. On this island are 12 villages with together approx. 20,000 inhabitants.

After I have done the first testflights with my new KAP-Rig#4 and the SONY P5 at home and after some corrections on this rig, the Rig#4 worked well in the holiday on Sylt.

  Length:   38,5 km
  Aeria:   93 km²
  Smallest place:   400 m
  Widest place:   12,6 km
  Highest dune:   52 m

Part # 2: Mud flats at Braderup and Keitum
Part # 3: On the beach at Wennigstedt, Westerland and List

Small Lighthouse in Kampen

The small lighthouse "Rote Kliff" was built from 1912 till 1913 and was closed down in 1974. The position is 54 degrees, 58 minutes north and 8 degrees, 20 minutes east. In the year 1978 the lighthouse was bought by Kampen and later it was restored.

At my first attempt to take some aerial photos of the small lighthouse in Kampen on March, the 24th 2002, the wind ran out after the first start and apart from some dunes there was not something to see on the three shoots, I took.

On March the 30th 2002 I started the 1,75 m² Flow-Form#1 at a windspeed of 4,5 m/s with a 2 mm polyesterline. The wind got stronger and the measurement after the landing showed me windspeeds near to 8 m/s. Regrettably the sky was covered with high clouds, so the photos got a little bit colourless.

Lighthouse in the east of the Listlander Ellebogen

At the nothernmost place of the German Island Sylt is the "Listland". The promontory in east-west direction is called "Ellebogen" (elbow). At this elbow in the dunes there are two lighthouses since 1858. They are only different in colors and marking, the lighthouses "List Ost" and "List West".

After we cycled from Wennigstedt to the easternmost point of the elbow, we went for a walk to the wonderful northernmost beach of Germany. The next island you can see from here in the north is the Danish island ROMÖ. This island is the most famous area for the buggydrivers. At this part of the beach swimming is dangerous for life and so it is strictly forbidden. The reason for this decision is the strong stream of the tides.

This first picture set, showing the lighthouse, I took in two flights, a little bit against the sun. The picture down on the right was taken after the second start with a half zoomed objektive. The three other pictures I took in the normal KAP adjustment with the most possibly rightfare angle. With higher focal lenghts the possibility of blurring gets higher. Furthermore it gets more difficult to hit the object, but I think this photos were worth to be taken.

The kite I took for this photos at a windspeed of 4 m/s was the FF#2 with a 2mm polyester kiteline.

The first picture set of the lighthouse was made against the sun. So I did a second start from another place behind the dunes. At one of the top pictures you can see the free place near the house, from where I lifted the kite.

The first two pictures in this second set were taken with an anchored kite. I took the transmitter and walked to the foot of the lighthouse to position the camera.

But if you want to take pictures with a small distance like the other two ones, you always must have the kiteline in your hand and the kite with the rig in your eye. Because the kite always moves a little with the camera by the wind, a touch cannot be excluded and you must be very carefully.

The position of the camera I determine by changing my own location to the left and the right, forward and backward.
