The reorganization of the Emscher belongs to the greatest projects of the international building exhibition (IBA) in the Ruhr district. Grass verges shall integrate the municipal parks, nature protectorates and industry fallow into a network along today's sewers to an "Emscher park" within some years. Not only animals and plants but primarily the people then shall reconquer the no man's land. With billion effort the 80 kilometers long, biologically dead sewer is changed back to a river "the blue Emscher".

The making of the sewage plant Bottrop is, with an estimated investment sum of 570 million DM, the greatest single project in the context of the Emscher reorganization. The plant was built from 1991 to 1996 on the area of the earlier sewage plant in Bottrop-Welheim. The catchment area contains the drainage areas of the "Boye, the Schwarzbach, Lanferbach, Holz-, Resser- and Sellmannsbach" with altogether 240 km2 and 648.000 inhabitants as well as numerous industrials in the area of the cities Bottrop, Bochum, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Gladbeck.

The digestion towers of the sewage plant are 50m high and with her egg-form they give an impressive looking.

In the four, 50 m of high digestion towers
of the sewage plant the sludge rots at approx.
36 centigrades for 20 days.

to a big part of the plant.

Data of the sewage plant:
Capacity: 1.34 million inhabitant results (sewages of approx. 650.000 inhabitants and an approximately equally big set to industry sewage)
Area of the sewage plant: 187.000 m2
Dry weather influx: 4.25 m3/sec
Total area of the before-, revival-and after-clarification basin: 58.000 m2

For place reasons exceptionally deep revival basins (10 meters) are required. The sewage flows through the plant within approx. 9.5 hours.

Next to the fenced area of the sewage plant there is a way with a little hill. Here I have started my kite to make some aerial photos of the sewage plant. Although the hill isn't very high, I clearly noticed the turbulences in the air at low altitudes.
