The Ruhr district has arisen and grown by the coal mines as the most important energy supplier for the reconstruction after the war. Thousands of workers came with her families here. There were enough work and apartments. How early settlements were built around a castle, the Ruhr district grew around its coal mines. Today, only a few mines are still operating and some winding towers, some of them are made to industry monuments, show of the former "coal factories".

Coal mine "Hugo in Gelsenkirchen - Buer", shaft "Hugo Nord in Bülse"

The coal mine "Hugo" was based in "Buer" in the year 1870 of a businessman team, and later named "Hugo". That was the name of one of the foundation members: "Hugo Honigmann". The first shaft was built at "Horster" street: "Hugo 1". The complete coal factory was out of nine shafts, and the main plant was "Hugo 2, 5, 8". The other, surrounding shafts are ventilation shafts around the main building. The combine coal mine "Ewald/Hugo" was shut down in the year 2000.

The winding tower of shaft # 7, "Hugo Nord".

It is standing in "Bülse" at the "Honigmann"-street. That shaft was built in 1940. If you look right near the shaft, you can see a little building. That is the so called "weather sluice" from the air pulling shaft. In this litte building I was mounting fluorescent lamps in winter, approx 30 jears ago, when I was a apprentice.

At that time all shaft towers were green. The newer towers became a light gray colour. On the pictures at the left and in the middle you can see the electric power station "Westerholt"
