The Ruhr district has arisen and grown by the coal mines as the most important energy supplier for the reconstruction after the war. Thousands of workers came with her families here. There were enough work and apartments. How early settlements were built around a castle, the Ruhr district grew around its coal mines. Today, only a few mines are still operating and some winding towers, some of them are made to industry monuments, show of the former "coal factories".

The pulley wheel from the shaft 4 of the coal mine "Mathias Stinnes" 3/4 has found its last resting-place on the waste dump # 19 in Gladbeck and serves as one of many monuments of the golden age of coal in Germany now. It is 6,5 m in diameter and 6500 kg in weight. The winding rope ran over this wheel 1038 m into the deep of the shaft. Altogether have become 60 million tons of coal and rock over this wheel from the depth.
One railroad wagong takes hold of around 40 tons of coal. The crowd corresponds then to 375.000 coal trains with altogether 1.500.000 cars.
The coal mine "Mathias Stinnes" was shut down in the year 1972.

The place on the waste dump # 19 is used by strollers and cyclists as a destination of the outing. Also some open air events have taken place here above on the mound.

For the air photos of the pulley wheel I have used two attempts. The wind has gone on 8-28-01 after a short time so that the ghost buster kite hasn't carried the camera any more. I could start the Flow form # 2 only with great difficulties because I was alone and the top of the mound is surrounded by trees and bushes all round here. By the many bushes the wind was missing in the ground area so it couldn´t fill the Flow Form before it can start. In such situations a framed kite is better because one simply can put it down or leans against a bush and then gets it with some fast steps into the air. If the tree tops are overcome the wind can take the kite and it flies by itself.

I then have been able to make some more pictures in the second attempt on 09-02-01.
